Overview

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) is the professional membership organisation and regulatory body for emergency medicine in the UK and Ireland. Incorporated by Royal Charter in 2008 and granted its Royal title in 2015, RCEM is the recognised professional authority that sets training standards, administers examinations and qualifications, and represents emergency medicine practitioners and the specialty itself. If you work in emergency medicine or are training to enter the profession, RCEM is the central professional body through which you establish and demonstrate competence, engage with peers, and contribute to the development of your specialty.

Who Should Join?

RCEM exists primarily to serve doctors and medical professionals working in emergency medicine across the UK and Ireland. This includes:

  • Consultant emergency physicians and senior emergency medicine doctors
  • Trainee emergency medicine doctors at all levels, from foundation year through to speciality training
  • Medical students with an interest in emergency medicine
  • Specialist nurses, physician associates, paramedics and other clinical professionals working in emergency departments
  • Emergency medicine educators and trainers

While RCEM's core membership comprises doctors training and practising in emergency medicine, the organisation engages with the broader emergency care workforce. Specific eligibility criteria and membership categories are available through the RCEM website, where you can explore options appropriate to your role, seniority and career stage.

Why Join?

Membership of RCEM provides access to the professional standards, qualifications and recognition that define competence and career progression in emergency medicine. For doctors, this includes the opportunity to work towards RCEM qualifications that are essential for career advancement and consultant practice. RCEM-approved training programmes and examinations create a coherent, nationally recognised pathway through the specialty.

Beyond qualification, membership connects you to a national and international community of emergency medicine professionals, positioning you within a profession with a clear voice in healthcare policy and practice. Being part of RCEM means engaging with an organisation that actively shapes how emergency medicine is trained, delivered and valued within the NHS and beyond.

Industry Role & Professional Standing

RCEM is the regulatory and standard-setting body for emergency medicine in the UK and Ireland. Its role extends far beyond individual membership services. The College sets the training standards that shape how doctors are prepared for emergency medicine, administers the examinations that verify competence and support career progression, and acts as the professional voice of the specialty in discussions about healthcare policy, workforce development and service quality.

Through its Royal Charter incorporation, RCEM holds formal authority to establish and uphold professional standards in emergency medicine. This authority is reflected in RCEM's engagement with healthcare regulators, government, the NHS and international emergency medicine organisations. Membership of RCEM therefore connects you not only to your local peers but to the profession's collective influence in shaping how emergency care is organised, trained and delivered across the UK and Ireland.
